Our History: From a Dream to a Legacy

The Spartans Rugby Club is more than just a youth rugby organization; it’s a testament to the power of a dream and the dedication of two remarkable individuals: our founders, Joe and Jackie Olivas.

A Dream Takes Shape: It all began when Joe and Jackie, both passionate about rugby, crossed paths on the field while playing for the Galveston Rugby Club back in 2005. Joe was part of the men’s team, and Jackie was making her mark on the women’s team. Little did they know that their love for the sport would lead to the creation of something truly special.

The Inception: In the small town of Alvin, Texas, Joe and Jackie embarked on a journey to fulfill their dream of establishing a local youth rugby club. In its early days, the Spartans Rugby Club was a modest endeavor, starting with a handful of boys who were not just rugby enthusiasts but also friends of Joe’s oldest son, Garrett, who was in 8th grade at the time.

A Humble Beginning: The first year was marked by challenges. With a core group of only 8-12 boys, there were often not enough players to form a complete team. In fact, they had to borrow players to participate in tournaments. But those early struggles couldn’t deter the passion and determination of these young athletes. They persevered, and most importantly, they fell in love with the sport.

From 8 to 200: The side of 8 grew steadily, evolving into what we have today – boys and girls teams spanning grades K-12. The Spartans Rugby Club is a thriving community of rugby enthusiasts, and we’re on a mission to reach 200 players. This remarkable journey wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our founders, Joe and Jackie, and the commitment of the young athletes who embraced rugby as a way of life.

A Living Legacy: What’s truly remarkable is that some of the original players from that first year are still playing rugby today. Their journey, along with many other former Spartans, can be explored in our Alumni section. It’s a testament to the lasting impact of the club and the love of rugby that continues to be passed down from one generation to the next.
